How to approach IELTS Writing Task 1?

When performing writing task 1, it is absolutely crucial that you make use of the correct tense (whenever you use a verb). If you fail to do this, you will be penalized.

If the writing task requires you to explain a procedure by describing steps or stages (without any time- frame given), you should make use of the present tense and passive voice.

Example:

The first step involves a background check.

Alternatively, you might be asked to report on a graphic: chart(s) and diagram(s).

Charts and Diagrams are visual representation of some statistical data and factual elemental factors or any subject. They can be formed of different kinds like charts, graphs, maps, diagrams, tables etc. Charts, diagrams and tables are all visuals which convey information briefly and clearly. Interpreting charts, diagrams, pictures and tables is a task of describing the given data into paragraphs.

First of all, analyze the task and figure out if the table, graph or chart shows the present situation, change over time or if the information is fixed in time.

If the context attempts to capture a ‘present situation’, make use of the present simple or present continuous tense.

     Examples:

The population of the city has increased significantly. (Simple Present tense)

Graduate coach ielts centre has been producing best ielts results in Biratnagar. (Present Continuous Tense

Examples:

The sales increased dramatically over the years. (For a past situation, fixed in time)

Gold prices had been soaring continuously since 2003. (For a past situation, changing overtime)

Alternatively, you might be given a graphic that initiates in the present and continues into the future. In such a scenario too, you will have to use language that express what might happen.

In addition, it is also crucial that you use the right 'voice'. For Category A questions, you should use 'active voice'. In contrast, for reporting Category B questions make sure that you use passive voice.

If the writing task requires you to explain a procedure by describing the steps or stages- without giving any time frame, use a combination of present tense and passive voice.

After analyzing all this, mull over:

·        The information and facts given

·        The arrangement and presentation of information

·        Comparison and contrast shown

·        Trends of changes in the figure and facts presented

·       An estimate about the past and prediction on the basis of the figure presented.

While interpreting should give a complete description of the text, you should consider the following factors.

·    You should compare and contrast the data and facts of each category.

·    You should make use of appropriate connectives (while, whereas, in comparison to the second element, in contrast, likewise, thereby, at the end) as required.

·    The first paragraph often says what type of chart it is and what it is about.

·   The second paragraph (and the paragraph(s) that follow) generally describes each section of the chart.
