ARGUMENT ESSAY
Some people believe that unpaid community service should be compulsory part of high school programs (for example working for charity, improving the neighborhood or teaching sports to younger children). To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Few people argue that voluntary work should be made part of the school curriculum; however, there are many others who are against this suggestion. Personally, I believe that unpaid community service is very beneficial for the students in order to help develop people skills. Also, community service is highly valued by both employers and universities, which can have practical implications for students in terms of professional and educational growth.
Education should not be confined strictly to academic pursuits. It is crucial for students to develop life skills like self-discipline, teamwork and empathy and a very efficient way to perfect these aptitudes is by getting involved in community service. Serving people who are less privileged than us is noble; it not only provides us an opportunity to interact and work with people from various backgrounds, but also infuses in us the importance of hard work. In addition, many organizations and colleges are looking for experiences in extra-curricular activities and although it is not mandatory for the students to have these experiences, this could clearly give them more leverage over others who are applying to these very organizations or colleges.
On the contrary, there are people who feel that high school is a place where students should only focus on their studies. These people argue that high school’s charge a high tuition fee and should concentrate strictly on academics and nothing else.
In conclusion, high school students should be made to involve in unpaid community service as this will help the students learn things that they wouldn’t normally learn in a high school environment. Provided that these unpaid programs can be made an obligation in high school, the students are likely to enhance their probability of getting into a good university and also gain an edge when considered for a job.
