GRAMMATICAL RANGE AND ACCURACY: Compound and Complex Sentences



So, you want to get a good score in your IELTS writing, but don’t know where to start?

Well, you can start with learning how to write a variety of sentence structures: compound and complex. Mastering the use of these two sentence structures will help you boost your points considerably for one of the marking criterias in IELTS writing: Grammatical Range and accuracy.

So, what is a compound sentence?

When you join two independent clauses together with a conjunction: or, and, but, because, etc, you create a compound sentence.

Examples (words in bold are conjunctions):-

  1)    You can go on a picnic, or you can go hiking.

  2)    Rita bought a pair of trousers at Bhatbhateni, and she wore them to the get-together.

  3)    He wants to get good grades, but he doesn’t like studying.


Next, do not forget to write complex sentences in your IELTS writing task!

Complex sentences are often constructed by placing a subordinating conjunction at the beginning of a dependent clause. Word(s) like although, even though, provided that, if, because, since, as, as if, before, after, while, when, whenever, during, as soon as, as long as, until and unless are subordinating conjunctions. 

Examples:-


  1)   Although he studied for his exam properly, he failed his exam.

  2)   Whenever he goes on an outing, he takes his daughter with him.

  3)   If the government can create jobs in Nepal, youths would not go abroad looking for jobs.

  4)   Because of the long rain yesterday, the streets are still flooded.

  5)   Since it’s hard to reach the place on foot, we went on a helicopter.

  6)   Until you score good marks in your exams, your father will not be happy with you.

  7)   Provided that you take precautionary measures, you should have no trouble climbing.
